Performance-based training is not like traditional
instructor-driven training methods.
Rather, it is a learner-centered approach to instruction which optimizes
adult learning by overcoming many of the obstacles present in traditional
training formats.
This proven method enhances learner competence and self-esteem by:
- Making progress through the training dependent on
successful completion of each program unit or module. Learners are given
explicit feedback about their performance at each step and are allowed to work
on each unit as long as it takes to achieve mastery.
- Giving learners control over their own rate of progress.
Within limits, the training is self-paced. This ensures the maximum time for
each individual.
- Allowing learners to evaluate their own performance.
Criteria for mastery of each unit are explicit and objective. Course
instructors act as managers of the learning environment rather than as
"graders."
- Offering flexibility in implementation. Learners can
complete the course in a concentrated period of time away from work, or they
can complete selected units right in the work place--minimizing time off the
job.
